FORT
ROCK VALLEY HISTORICAL HOMESTEAD

The Fort Rock Valley Historical Society founded in 1981 with eight charter members conceived the Homestead Village which opened with two buildings in 1988. In the ensuing years more land was acquired from the BLM and more buildings were brought in from surrounding homestead sites. Many of the buildings were considered hazardous to open range cattle and were scheduled to be put to the torch. Without the dedication and perseverance of the Fort Rock Historical Society's members there would be very little evidence of the life and time of this chapter in Oregon history. The membership of the society has grown to about 125 members, but only a handful of members reside locally. The local members carry a heavy burden in keeping the museum maintained and staffed. With the exception of a couple of small grants all of the work in putting this impressive museum together has been accomplished with volunteer labor and contributions donated by visitors to the museum. Click around, get acquainted and then come visit. If you want wide open vistas, clear air and starlit nights then this is the place to come. The high desert of Oregon is an intoxicating place. Even though most of the homesteaders did not make it financially here most of them have left stories of fond memories of the community they forged out of this land. For most, their optimism and positive spirit was rewarded as they moved on to take advantage of the bounty the Northwest had to offer during that period.
