Not quite up to today's standards, but this residence was probably one of the best spots in the valley 9,000 years ago. At that time the occupants would look out on to a nice little beach and across a beautiful lake that covered the valley. The Sandal Cave is located about 1 mile west of the museum. Dr. Luther Cressman, head of the University of Oregon Anthropology Department, headed an expedition that unearthed about sixty pair of sandals, woven of sagebrush strands, in this cave. Dr. Cressman later wrote a book about this discovery. |
